Agaete
Agaete, with a population of around 6,000, is situated in the north-west of the island of Gran Canaria. This small town has managed to preserve its heritage and charms visitors with the harmony and beauty of its historic centre, with its white houses nestled against the slopes of the valley.
A Rich Religious and Cultural Heritage
The Church of La Concepción is situated in the historic centre. The building, which replaced the original chapel, dates from 1515 and determined the layout and orientation of the first streets and the town hall square.
The church, as we see it today, was built in 1874 following a fire, which led to the creation of a new district.
Directly in front of it lies the Plaza de la Constitución, surrounded by the town’s most important stately homes. The municipal cultural centre, housed in a 19th-century mansion, is a particularly fine example of colonial architecture.
On the way to Puerto de Las Nieves, the municipality’s coastal village, you will pass the chapel, where you can admire the triptych of the Virgin of Las Nieves, attributed to the 16th-century Flemish painter Joos Van Cleve. The sculpture of the three poets on the seafront promenade symbolises the vibrant cultural and artistic life that flourished in Agaete at the beginning of the 20th century.
