Faneque Rock and the Dragon’s Tail
The Roque Faneque cliff, rising 1,027 metres above sea level, drops steeply into the sea from the Tamadaba Nature Reserve. The coastline, as seen heading south from Agaete, resembles a beached dragon sleeping eternally, of which only the tail is visible: hence the name ‘Dragon’s Tail’ (Cola del Dragón).
A Breathtaking Natural Setting
These two landforms are part of the coastal landscape of Agaete. The steep cliffs are home to species of flora and fauna found nowhere else. On the road from Agaete heading south, we are treated to a magnificent sight: some one hundred metres above the sea, after a sharp bend, the imposing silhouette of the ‘Dragon’s Tail’ suddenly appears, like a silhouette against the horizon. The deep blue of the sea, the brilliant blue of the sky and the bluish-grey of the mountainous landscape, the seagulls… a magical moment that takes our breath away.
