La Rama’s Feast

During this traditional festival which takes place every year from 3 to 5 August and is held in honour of the Virgin Our Lady of the Snows, patron saint of El Puerto de las Nieves, many participants jump into the sea and beat the water with twigs, whilst praying for prosperity and good health. La Rama was declared a folk festival of tourist interest in 1972.

A Heady Celebration

For three days, thousands of people gather and dance to the rhythm of the village’s folk music groups, waving pine and eucalyptus branches. Papercut heads depicting local figures lead the procession. Together, they make their way through the village, dancing and singing, to the shrine of the Virgen de las Nieves, situated at El Puerto de las Nieves, where they lay their branches as an offering. It is an exhilarating experience, thanks to the music, the movement and the colours – not to mention the rum! The festival ends with a grand fireworks display.
