Fauna and Flora

Numerous endemic species can be found along the coastal cliffs of Agaete and in the depths of the gorges. These are plant and animal species that are found exclusively in this area. Among the animal species, Gallotia sehlini, the giant lizard of Gran Canaria, is the most iconic.

An Extraordinary Variety of Endemic Species

“The west coast of Gran Canaria consists of rugged mountain ranges which, in some places, drop straight down into the sea as impressive cliffs.

Numerous endemic plant species thrive on these cliffs: Sonchus canariensis, Argyranthemum frutescens, Sventenia bulpleuroides and several succulents, as well as huge bushes of Euphorbia canariensis, Euphorbia aphylla and Aeonium virgineum, which take root on the almost inaccessible cliffs.

As for endemic animal species, invertebrates are best represented by spiders, millipedes, pseudoscorpions, cockroaches and beetles typical of the Agaete region. But there are also bird species adapted to the Canary Islands or native to the region, such as the blue chaffinch, the great Canary crow, the Canary kestrel, the single-coloured swift and, of course, the Canary goldfinch, the ancestor of the domestic canary.
