Gastronomy

Agaete offers visitors a rich and varied culinary experience based primarily on local products: fresh fish, tropical fruits, and vegetables from the Agaete Valley… Goat, sheep, and cow cheeses will also delight even the most discerning palates. But Agaete’s most distinctive product is coffee.

Cheese and Coffee: the Authentic Flavors of Local Cuisine

Cheese and coffee: the authentic flavours of local cuisine. Not to be forgotten are the famous ‘papas arrugadas’ (wrinkled potatoes) with mojo – small potatoes boiled with plenty of salt and eaten with a spicy sauce – as well as the fish soup, ‘gofio escaldado’ – a thick porridge made from roasted maize flour and fish stock – and the periwinkles, amongst other delicacies.
But Agaete’s main product is coffee. It is grown in the valley and, according to experts, is of exceptional quality. The variety, which originates from Ethiopia, is Arabica Typica. It was brought to Agaete two centuries ago from the acclimatisation garden in Orotava on the neighbouring island of Tenerife. It is the last remaining active coffee plantation in Europe.”
